Fence Repairs and Replacement

Fence repairs and replacement: keep what is still sound

A broken panel does not always mean the whole fence needs replacing. If the posts, rails and neighbouring sections are sound, a targeted repair or replacement may be suitable. Equally, fitting a fresh panel between failing posts can leave the underlying problem unresolved. We assess the supporting structure as well as the visible damage.

Share a view of the full boundary and close-up photos of the failed section, post bases and adjoining panels. Tell us whether the fence is leaning, moving or missing boards. Photos help us understand the problem, but hidden decay, foundations and compatibility with replacement materials may need checking at the property.

Repair options matched to the damage

01

Panel and board replacement

Replace broken or worn timber panels, boards and rails where the supporting fence can be retained. The opening size, fittings and condition of the posts are checked before choosing replacement materials. A matching style can be discussed, subject to the existing fence and available options.

02

Failed or leaning posts

A weak post can affect several otherwise sound panels. We consider the post base, adjoining rails, gate loads and surrounding ground before recommending the repair. Replacing the failed support may be appropriate where the remainder of the boundary is in usable condition.

03

Full fence replacement

Where deterioration extends along the run, replacing the boundary may be more practical than repeated isolated repairs. This also allows the height, layout, gates and post specification to be reconsidered. We explain the proposed removal and installation work in the quotation.

Practical fencing advice

What we consider before recommending a repair

Fence repairs and replacement start with the cause of the failure. Rotten timber at ground level, loose foundations, damaged rails and posts supporting a heavy gate call for different work. We look at whether a repair would leave a sound boundary, not simply whether the damaged panel can be removed.

Tell us about narrow access, planting, nearby paving and any old concrete that may need taking out. Existing concrete posts may be reusable if secure, correctly spaced and compatible with the replacement panels. Cracked posts, damaged gravel boards or loose foundations can change the specification and price.

Before changing the height or position of a fence, check any permissions or restrictions that apply to your property. The Planning Portal’s guide to fences, gates and garden walls is a useful starting point.

Fencing questions

Fence Repairs and Replacement: your questions answered

Can you replace just one damaged fence panel?

Potentially, yes. The adjoining posts and rails need to be secure and compatible with the replacement panel. Send photos of the opening, supports and surrounding fence so we can consider whether panel-only replacement is suitable.

Can you repair a leaning garden fence?

We can assess a leaning fence. The cause may be a failed post, loose foundation, damaged rails or deterioration along the run. The appropriate repair depends on what is still sound, so include close-up photos and a view of the full boundary.

Do you replace broken fence posts?

Yes. Failed posts can be assessed for replacement while retaining usable panels or rails where practical. Access, old concrete, the fence condition and any gate supported by the post affect the work required.

Can you replace panels in existing concrete posts?

Potentially, if the concrete posts are secure, correctly spaced and suitable for the chosen panels. Cracked posts, loose foundations and damaged gravel boards need to be considered before assuming they can remain.

Do you repair weather-damaged fencing?

Yes. We assess loose panels, broken rails and damaged timber fence sections. Send photos of the affected area and the full run. We confirm the appropriate work and scheduling for the job; this is not a promise of an emergency call-out service.

Is repair cheaper than replacing the whole fence?

A targeted repair may involve less work where the rest of the boundary is sound. Where multiple posts and panels are failing, repeated repairs may not be practical. We discuss the condition and quotation rather than assuming repair is always the best option.
