Closeboard Fencing

What is closeboard fencing?

Closeboard fencing uses overlapping vertical timber boards fixed to supporting rails to form a solid boundary. Featheredge boards taper across their width so adjoining boards overlap. The posts and rails carry the fence, while the detail at ground level helps separate the timber boards from the garden surface.

The term may describe a fence constructed along the run or a closeboard-style panel system. Those arrangements are not identical: fixed panel widths, corners and changing ground levels affect the layout differently. We discuss the appropriate construction for your boundary rather than choosing the board style alone.

Work suited to your garden

A closeboard specification suited to the boundary

01

Posts and supporting rails

The strength of the boundary depends on suitable supports as well as the boards. We consider the height, ground conditions, corners and any attached gate before recommending timber or concrete posts and the supporting construction. Exposed boundaries need individual assessment.

02

Height and ground levels

A privacy fence should address the garden’s needs without ignoring levels or property restrictions. We discuss the intended height and how the run meets sloping ground, paving and existing surfaces. Gravel-board options can form part of the agreed specification.

03

Gates and finishing details

A timber gate or suitable trellis can be considered alongside the new fence. Opening width, gate support, overall height and the desired screening need to be agreed together. We confirm the details included in the quote rather than treating every addition as standard.

Practical fencing advice

Closeboard fencing or traditional timber panels?

Both can create a private garden boundary. A fence constructed along the run can accommodate the boundary layout differently from fixed-width panels, while a compatible panel system can make later panel replacement straightforward. Access, height, ground levels and the appearance you want all influence the choice.

A solid timber screen is exposed to wind pressure, so a taller fence is not automatically the right answer for every position. We assess the supporting specification and the surrounding garden. Existing posts should not be assumed suitable for a new closeboard boundary without checking their condition and layout.

Before changing the height or position of a fence, check any permissions or restrictions that apply to your property. The Planning Portal’s guide to fences, gates and garden walls is a useful starting point.

Fencing questions

Closeboard Fencing: your questions answered

Are closeboard fencing and featheredge fencing the same thing?

The terms are often used together. Closeboard describes the solid boundary formed by overlapping vertical boards; featheredge describes the tapered timber boards commonly used to build it. The posts, rails and ground-level details still need specifying for the complete fence.

Can you supply and fit closeboard fencing?

Yes. Fencing Masters supplies and fits the agreed boards or panels, posts and supporting components. The height, layout, gate requirements and removal of existing fencing are discussed before the quotation is agreed.

Can closeboard fencing be fitted on sloping ground?

It may be suitable, but the change in level and the chosen construction need checking. A fence built along the run and a fixed-width panel system meet slopes differently. Send photographs showing the gradient when requesting your quote.

Can I have concrete posts and gravel boards?

Concrete-post and gravel-board options can be discussed alongside timber-post systems. Compatibility with the proposed closeboard construction, the ground conditions and the appearance you want influence the final specification.

Does closeboard fencing need maintenance?

Timber fencing should be checked for loose fixings, damaged boards and changes around the post bases. Keep soil and dense planting from building up against the timber where practical, and follow the timber supplier’s advice for any treatment or finish.

How much does a new closeboard fence cost?

The price depends on length, height, the post and rail arrangement, ground conditions and access. Gates, gravel boards and old-fence removal can also affect the work. Request a free quotation based on the complete boundary specification.
